destruct\hour #1

In my continuing attempt multi up the media of znaddanz.com, may I present the first edition of The Destruct\hour, sixty minutes of music and madness for your listening pleasure.

I imagine I'm not the only person who sits at his desk listening to xfm's radiostream rotating their top ten all day, so this will be a brief respite from that. I can't promise you'll like every song, but I can promise that you'll like at least one, that you'll smile at least once, and you'll hear at least one song you've never heard before. Think of it as a mixtape made for you by a friend. Me, in this case.

Stick it on your iPod, listen to it at work, listen to it at home if you're one of those people whose computer is also their music-station. If you're one of those sad souls who has dial-up or pays for bandwidth or uses a rock for a pretend computer or something, comment to let me know and I shall mail you a copy of the show on CD. You can't say fairer than that.

Many thanks to Rob at The Cheese Factory for helping me out with the show. He rules.

Oi! Want to see NIN again tonight? Have a spare ticket (and also have bed, but thanks for the offer!)

That sounds extremely dodgy when I read it back

Actually surprisingly very good. Quite enjoyable through my gym session this morning.

Few tips though

  1. Tag the MP3 properly so it appears in iTunes or what not properly.

  2. Stop fiddling with stuff in the background while you talk.

  3. You're laughing/giggling to much, as if you think the whole thing is a bit stupid. Which if you give the impression you feel that, that will follow through onto the listener.

  4. Never ever sing along with a track in the background. That was possibly the weakest part of the show. Talking over a track just annoys and detracts from the track itself.

  5. The into was amusing, but didn't work that well I thought. Besides the fact you were on the verge of cracking out, the 1-1 paring of different words was rough. Better off doing everything in one voice be it yours or the sample.

  6. Otherwise really fucking good effort.

I'm impressed. Made really good listening. Good job.

Thanks, man.

  • 1. I don't know how to do that, but I'll look into it.
  • 2-5. I figured, much like everything on this site, it was better to just be 'me' (that is, giggly/stupid/unserious/annoying) than try and be 'professional' or somehow, y'know, 'not me'. Shikita na ga, as the Japanese say.
  • 4. Believe it or not, that was a mistake, I didn't realize that had happened until I'd already uploaded it. However once I noticed it, I realized that, for one track only, it wasn't such a bad thing.
  1. Open the file in iTunes (or any MP3 program) and right click on the file and select "show info"
  2. I know you. YOu is slightly less giggly. You can still be you, but sound like you don't feel like a knob while you do it
  3. Aah ok. I thought it was you trying to be funny or something. As a mistake I'll let it pass :-)

Okay, ID3 tags added. Good point about the laughing- I'll take that on board for the next show.

i listened, i liked. and now i want a western burger!

ooh, and loved that last track, very sing-along-able. who was it again?

That was 'Live'. Yeah I love it when he freaks out and starts screaming at the end. Screaming RULES. Glad you liked it. Tell friends.

Also you should change the ID3 tag to read "destruct\hour" rather than "destructhour". The slash makes it soo much cooler.

I wuz worried (not knowing much about tags) that putting in confusing characters like slashes and things might screw things up.

No tags can handle most characters because they need to be able to handle foreign bands.

Excellent stuff!
Hope there's another one soon, and I think the answer to Adrian's good advice is probably just to relax and have some faith that it'll be good, and that it needn't be a joke.

Particularly interested by the NIN remix: went hunting and found that they've now released the innards of Only [registration required for that link], but with project/session files in 4 different formats (rather than just GarageBand).

If I come up with anything interesting, I'll give you a shout. It won't be good, but there's an outside chance it'll be interesting...

I too am working on an 'Only' remix, but it's taking longer than I thought! It should be awesome, though. Glad you enjoyed the show- there'll be another one along shortly.

It should be awesome, though.
Now there's some faith. My first attempt sounds a little empty right now, but I think it'll be just about worth listening to if I throw some of the synth back in here and there.

We're trying as hard as possible not to directly reuse any sound from the original track, except for the vocal track. All other sounds we're 'warping' dramatically, plus I'm hoping to add some original synths in later.

I think for the moment I'm sticking to the stuff that was in the original recording. There's plenty of good sound there that was very brief, very quiet, or otherwise hidden away in the original.
Frankly, I don't know where to start looking for other decent sound, so for the time being I'll do without.

An acoustic quitar and an untrained voice (and no recording equipment) are my normal tools, so for a departure like this I'm keeping it simple...

We're using Logic to mix, and SoundForge to manipulate the sounds. Forge is to audio what photoshop is to images- you can do some serious up-fucking.

Yeah, it sounds like you pretty much know what you're doing, or at the very least like the other part(s) of this 'we' you're using knows something.
I know nothing (proud of it), so I'm sticking to my demo of ACID Pro. We shall see what comes of it.

The other part would be Rob, who is an audio maestro of unprecedented talent. I just kind of stare blankly at the screen while he does everything.

Apologies for the necro-commenting, but how is your 'Only' project going?

I have something, but I don't know if it's finished, I don't know if I like it, and I don't know if I ever want to let it out...

Uhm, we've currently made 60 seconds of (immaculately crafted!) mix. The plan is to make four minutes worth at the same bpm of the original song, then up the bpm so it's only 3 mins long. However I can hear the rest of it in my head, it's just a matter of finding spare computer time at the cheese factory, which is currently in the throes of making a music video.
