Gorillaz = cuntz

So, I ordered the new Gorillaz album, because I liked the single. I could have downloaded it and not paid, but I like to financially support artists that do good stuff.

So I get the CD yesterday and pop it into my computer. Nothing. Computer doesn't even register that there's a CD in the drive. I chalk it up to the fact that I have a lousy computer at home, but it's mildly annoying.

Get to work. Pop it into the drive. It installs its own (shitty) proprietary player to play the CD. On MY computer, without even asking. iTunes can't read it. Windows Media doesn't register that there's a disc in the drive. So I look a little closer at the disc and it's got a little 'Copy Control' warning on it. It's like this ON PURPOSE. It's even got a little rant at the bottow about how copying something to your PC 'has the same effect as stealing music'. [uhm, fuckwits, I paid for your fucking album, and you're accusing me of being a thief? Screw you]

Fucking DRM bullshit. So I can't give you a review for this album, because I can't listen to this album except through the fucking shitty proprietary player, which I refuse to fucking do. I'm going to go and have to rip shitty copies off the `net just to get it to do what every other album does. I'm writing to play.com to tell them I want a fucking refund.

Asstards.

Which is why I am not bothered by downloading shit off the net. Until such time as I can buy music that I am free to do with what I want, I'm quite happy to not buy it.

I bought one CD that was DRM'ed. After trying to rip it for my iRiver, I gave up, took it back and got a refund. I didn't even bother donwloading a copy, I have never heard the band since, and probably wont get their next CD as a result. So everyone looses.

Well, I got the new Tori as well, and that rips just fine. It's not like I'm running around distributing her tracks all over the place.

I FUCKING HATE THAT!!!!

That and those flash based bollocks that suddenly springs up over whatever you were doing.

Why yes [insert name of fuckwad band] the ONLY thing I am doing right now is wanting to listen to your music and watch the latest video of yours and yes I DO want to be interrupted, of course I wouldn't DREAM of listening to your music in the background, you are quite right, thank you for correcting my errant behaviour.

Asstards the lot of 'em!

Yes but dudes, the new Gorillaz album is fucking amazing. It's the best album I've bought in about 5 or 6 years. And it copied onto my Xbox without a quibble. Of course, I can't carry my Xbox around and listen to it, but when I'm doing a drive-by in GTA it's always nice to have a bit of 'Fire Coming Out Of The Monkeys' Head' blaring on the stereo.

Seriously. Enough with the moaning. Put the disc in a fucking CD player and listen to it. It should be all about what the music is like, not about whether or not you can rip the poxy thing onto your iRiver/iPod/iWhateverthefuck.

I don't listen to music off a CD player anymore. I am buying the music not the format. If I am paying for it I should be able to listen to it on whatever poxy device I want to.

I'm sure it IS a great album and I'll certainly be acquiring it, but the point stands.

I want to listen to it on my computer and my iPod. I rarely, if ever, listen to music anywhere else (except the car, but even then that's usually from my iPod). I don't own a hi-fi.

I'm with Gordon and Adrian on this one. I don't even own a CD-player. My £8 isn't for the disc, it's for the right to play the music. Right now that right is being abused. I should not have to check 'compatibility issues' to buy a CD. It's technically a CD-ROM, which is not what I bargained for.

I should add that on the CD case there's a little note saying: "May not play in some car stereos" (!!!)

Isn't 'Feel Good Inc' being used as the soundtrack to the latest iPod ads?

It's true! That's hilarious.

"Download Gorillaz, with iTunes....because you won't be able to use your disc!"

In fairness the fact the CD doesn't run on computers probably has very little to do with the band or with Apple and a lot to do with the record company.

That may be true in fairness, but that's the main lake of fairyland.

The band is ultimately responsible for thier product. Saying: "It's not really thier fault." is true, but it's also a lot like a Captain of a sinking ship saying: "My men didn't move fast enough on the riggings! It's thier fault!" Yeah, probably, but you're still the Captain, and you're still responsible.

It's a Gorillaz album. Thier name is all over it. They're cunts.

Perhaps, perhaps, but they're amazing cunts.

In the immortal words of the Doobie Brothers: 'Listen to the Music'.

It's true- with the help of my IT department I managed to get the tracks ripped and now have copies all over the place. Review forthcoming.
